Girl Scout Gold Project

Dear Customer Relations Department:

"Charity begins at home". This is a principle that most children learn very young and a principle that my family adheres to. As part of our community family in Raleigh, North Carolina, I know you also believe in this tenet. With all the national attention of Hurricane Katrina, many local charities are not receiving the aid that they usually rely on to exist.

As a Senior Girl Scout helping the community, the lack of funding for important local programs caught my eye. One program, The Healing Place, makes a difference in my community for women. I have dedicated my Gold Award Project to this worthwhile organization. The Healing Place is the only women's recovery and treatment program for homeless and drug-addicted women living in Wake County.

The current success of the men's program gives an inspiring sense of hope. The program helps homeless substance abusers become responsible, productive and self-supporting citizens. Producing outstanding results, the recovery rate for people who complete the program is more than 70 %. The program is cost efficient as well. When a homeless person is taken off the street, it costs $262 per day at the Wake Alcohol Treatment Center or about $60 per day at jail. The cost of the services at the Healing Place is less than $25 a day.

The Healing Place for Women and their children will open soon in Raleigh. My Gold Award Project is to provide these women with the basic necessities that they will need when they leave the street and enter the program. I am assembling gift bags with socks, underwear, toiletries, phone cards, snacks, makeup, and other feminine products. My project time line will center around Valentine's Day with a theme of "Love Yourself". It takes a great deal of courage for these individuals to move toward sobriety and a productive life. We can show these women that the community applauds their efforts for a new life with the gift bags.
How can you help? There will be 88 women in the program. I am asking for contributions from you to fill these gift bags with necessities. As a community partner in Raleigh, I know that you will see the need and support the project with your products.

I am a member of Girl Scout Troop 540 of Area 14 in Wake County, North Carolina. I have been a Girl Scout for 11 years. It has been an important part of my life and now I want to be an important part of these women's lives in my community. Our 501 C 3 number is 560-79-1500. and i'm sorry for bailing on doing my "anual" model united nations post. This year's event was completly different from any of my previous years in doing it. Partially because EVERYONE came, and partially because my boyfriend was there (not such a bad thing : p )

my short story!!

She went to the sink. The sink that had always been there; with the purest, clearest water and the cleanest white marble. It was the one thing she could trust, or at least the only water she could trust. Putting her hands under the cool, soft, water, she let out a sigh of relief. Carefully, she took her towel and wiped the tears off her face.

There are pressure points on your hands, between your thumb and your pointer-finger in the litter web of skin stretching between them. She held this very spot with her left hand. She clamped her fingers so tightly on that spot that her hand started to turn a rosy red. Although it didnt make the pain go away, it focused her attention on just that one spot on her hand. She held this position for what seemed like forever, trying to concentrate on that one pressure point, meditating (or trying to) until she felt herself cool down. Her once dilated eyes became smaller, her shoulders relaxed, and her pounding heart grew softer.

When she felt she was calm, she washed the blood from her fingers and quickly dried them. She opened a new box of band-aids and put one on each finger.

The next morning she went to school. Her band-aids seemed like neon lights, lit up and ready to attract attention. She was greeted with the usual sympathetic concerns of her friends, the "what happened?"s and the "are you ok?"s. One of the worst things, it seemed, to say to a person was these compassionate questions. She didnt want the attack to have happened, it just did. And thus, she shrank back. Trying to dim the screaming brightness coming from those damn band-aids. Even the most outgoing person would shrink back and want to be completely invisible after a panic attack. All she could do was politely nod to her friends bombarding her with empathetic questions and sit down to prepare for class to start.

Throughout the day she was constantly reminded of her own deed of the previous night. And every one in a while she would have to submit to her disorder's will and wash the puss and sweat out from under her band-aids. The criminal that is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder would veer its ugly face, forcing the poor girl to run disgusting, filthy, slimy school-bathroom water over her hands. Just the idea of it made her cringe.

As the day drew on, there was wave after wave of classes and obstacles she had to conquer before she was able to go home. Each wave weathering her down a bit more than the previous, until finally the day was over; it ended just before the last wave knocked her down and drove her under.

After a considerable amount of homework, she found herself crying and scratching at her hands once more. From the sweet, innocent girl, she transformed into a savage barbarian. Taking a comb and rubbing her skin with it, picking at her already stubby nails, tearing hangnails, the goo was her prey.

It wasnt a real goo; but then again it wasnt a fake goo. It felt like mucus and glue, and smelt like pineapples and sweat. But there was almost no way to make the revolting goo go away. Sometimes it just went away, but most of the time it stayed there to haunt you.

At the sink once again she tried to drown her panic and fear. She had to get the goo off. And she would have accomplished her goal, if only the goo could come off. She knew as well as the next guy that the pursuit of getting the goo off was always futile. Thoughts of all kinds came pouring into her head, like some dam had randomly broke and let all of the thoughts it was withholding pour into this pitiable girl's head.

Shaking and sobbing she looked into the mirror. Her hair looked untamed and wild, mascara and tears soaked her cheeks. But when she looked into the mirror she didnt see this nameless face of "insane" that she had seen moments ago. But rather she saw a strong girl. A girl with no weakness. She saw herself, she saw Abria Delores.

Arg

Stupid emotional rollercoaster ride things. I cant decide whether or not i've had good or bad days anymore because each day has its "extrema" (to use a precal term). Everyday can instill the worst to the best feelings in someone. Each day is a new day--like a clean slate. Almost completly untainted by the previous say.

I was also thinking about Donnie Darko. Specifically the parts where he tells the porn dude off when he's giving the students bullshit about good and bad and love and hate. And why that part was so apealing and why does the directer say in the commentaries that he is a scifi superhero when that seems like a stretch. But if occured to me that every kid wants to be the person to stand up and make a point that everyone agrees with except the authority--everyone wants to go against authority (whatever that may be) and in that sense, the kid that does the exceptional task of standing up against wrong authority is a superhero. But what qualifies as a superhero? Do they merely exsist in the alternate universes we created them in, in comic books, cartoons and movies? Or are they less than just people who fight crime with superpowers. Can a superhero be someone who has good intentions and does the right thing? Someone who has integrity? Maybe a combination of sorts? But then we would have to define "super" and "hero" seperatly.

but as for school, i dont know. i have this enormous pressure, and the problem is that its a pressure i dotn want to have. I know, no one "wants" to have pressure. But i have a huge grudge against school happenings (grades that is). Not mine particually, but the idea of "grades". Who the hell is to judge us based on school--with 6 or 7 simple letters they think they can sum us up. And now that the essay is on the SAT, it'l make a mockery of all formed opinions and turn them into what standardized tests think.

Procrastination

School is so stupid. Thats right, i said, now its out in the open for everyone to analyze and critisize. None of my classes outrightly rock this year (except for latin, but thats a given) and its driving me INSANE!

its like last year, but worse because i know i suck. My self confident in my ability to do school work has crashed and burned a while ago. I gained confidence in soem other fields, but not in the school work one.

and it doesnt even matter--in 2 years, whos gonna care what kinds of grades i got. i wont. and who ever does is a major loser

Starting Clean?

Arg. I made a very hard decision and i hope it plays out to have benefitted the both of us.

Of course i will still love him. I honestly dont see how anyone couldnt. Which is why i'm comfortable with my desicion. I think he's gonna be fine, and i think hes gonna find so many other loves. And if it comes to us wanting to get back together, then thats perfect. But just for the point of experience, well we need more before we can commit ourselves for more than a year.

Methane: A Solution for Pollution!

Ironically enough, one of the most powerful green house gases can be our solution to future energy problems that seem to be veering our way. CH4 ladies and gentlemen, is the answer.

States like wisconsin and north carolina are known for our swine and dairy cows. Those animals produce waste. That waste is usually thrown into some lagoon which could easily run off into water supplies, which would just be gross (it reduces oxygen supplies in the water and endangers aquatic life; the added nutrients can produce excessive algae; when wastes seeps into ground water (eg wells) the water quality is at risk, etc). And all of this waste ferments over time producing methane is potentially is very dangerous to the environment.

We can harness this methane, which is the main component of natural gas. If we collected the waste of swine and other animals and put it into a methane digester (which i will be making), we could harness that methane and use it to power neighborhoods!

There are already natural gas cars! Both natural gas fuel cells and engines. You probably have road in one in your life. They are commonly in vehicles that travel many miles per day. Some examples are: taxicabs, transit and school buses, airport shuttles, garbage trucks, delivery trucks and other public work vehicles. ALso the honda civic GX uses natural gas (not to be confused with the hybrid)

and its a clean solution! When burning natural gas, it produces 47,000 lbs/billion Btu less CO2 than oil and 9,1000 lbs/Btu less CO2 than coal. When oil produces 1,122 lbs/billion Btus lof Sulfur oxides, coal is producing 2,591 lbs/billion Btus and natural gas is producing 1 lbs/billion Btu. In addition, natural gas is significantly less expensive then some more commonly used residential energy sources. Electricity, the most common, costs 24.27 $/Btu, whereas natural gas costs 6.56 $/Btu.

So, basically, its all about the methane_

I'm finally HOME! though, if only for a day its still wonderful.

I had the chance to see my favorite man yesturday. That'll hold me for a couple of days maybe. But goodness i am going to miss him. Only two more weeks!

One other thing that i majorly missed that i didnt realize i missed was being surounded by people who love me, my family. Its weird that it never hit me before, but at the beach it kind of clicked that these people (including my brothers) really missed me and really love me. I heard about their reactions to hearing about my panic attack at ecu, and all of them cared about me, they wanted me to be in good health and they were worried about me. It used to be that i was completly independent, but i guess i never really was. I always depended on this love; i wouldnt know who i'd be today with out it.

for the rest of my day at home i plan on sitting back on my favorite couch in the bonus room and watching 4 hours of star trek. THen maybe some packing.

People!

As much as i love some of these people at summer ventures, i never realized how much value i placed in my alone time until i came here. Some girls just talk for teh sake of talking, they dont acknowledge silence as a thing of beauty or at least something to be explored, but rather, they think of it as a couple of awkward moments that need to be broken by our man-made language. but nothing we can say can ever be as beautiful as somehting as natural as silence.

you have no idea how much i'd like to go find a nice patch of grass and stare at the sky. I miss a lot of other things too though. I miss being able to completly express my feelings, i miss having control, i miss independence, i miss my friend and love and family.

I also find myself getting really anxious and nervous around crowds again--or even when one person is standing closer than i'd like to me. I also seem to be washing my hands more. I hate it. I think it must be all these people and this disorganization--at times everyone will just start speaking all at once, its so incoherent and disorganized. i cant stand it.

15 Freaking Titrations

Thats right, in the last 72 hours i have done 15 freaking titrations. You have no idea how incredably stupid, tedious and not-cool those are until you have to do 5 in one hour. Uhgg.

Though i have met a lot of awesome people here (including a fellow trekie and bassoonist) i still miss everyone back home. Email me fools. call if you wish to.

I have also met someoen with like, the exact taste of music as me! Props to Anna (trekie), Roshni (awesome taste in music), Laura (bassoonist), Jenny (all around cool), and Britteny (sorry if i spelled your name wrong). Oh charles i should talk about charles! Hes this physics assistent, he is the weirdest guy in the world. He reeks the essence of dork. but i have to go and i will tell "you" more next trip to the library!

Well, Here I Am

So yeah, i'm at ECU. This first day has been awkward. Very boring. The first half hour always being somehting like "lets go around the world, everyone tell your name and where you're from". Quite redundent, especially when i say "raleigh charter" and people are like "where are you from?" urg! (and i still dont know everyone's name.)

I find myself facing one of my new but big fears: chalk. THe class rooms all have chalk boards--well actually the chemistry room didnt. But my other two classes have chalk boards. I remember in problem solving when the lady walked toward the board and picked up chalk instead of a dry-erase marker, i could feel my heart drop and the hair on my back stick up with FEAR. I just hope they dont make me write with it (eewww)

But physics wasnt that bad. It took me a while to grasp two of the concepts, but its so cool to know how the world works in that way.

but i miss everyone back home a lot alreayd. I dont know what i'm going to do the rest of teh 13 days. No one is allowed to forget me. And everyone is required to call me/email me. (myrockintoe@nc.rr.com)

I've got to admit it's getting better

Thats right, I stole my brother's Beatles CD again (mwahaha). But its also true. Things seem to be getting better. This summer has been so awesome so far. My goodness. I'm exploding with joy and love! Hahah, yes, joy, from my personal joy emitter to be specific. God i love that guy. He makes me melt--and that is one of the best feelings of the whle spectrum of human feelings.

I didnt get the grades i would have liked, well actually i didnt get one grade i didnt like and i'm very proud of one specific grade that i worked hard to bring up and did. But getting that one bad grade really made me think. I was upset for a while, and then i realized i could love someting and not be good at it. And when i showed my grades to my mother (the action i had been dreading), although she would have liked that to be better she was proud of me. She was proud because although i did not get a good grade, i worked my ass off and tryed and i loved it. She was proud of me for loving it. And it hit me, that grades arnt anyhting. Although colleges judge you based on your grades, your grades arnt what make you you. They dont define you. They dont tell you what you love, they dont tell you what you hate. Just because i got a bad grade in something doenst mean i dont love it.

Goodness, Love seems to be a common thread in everything i do.

Dont really know what this post is about. I probably should be packing instead of writing. I've had the best couple of weeks--i mean really. Most of my happiness can be attributed to a word that everyone's pretty much scared to use, yes, the "L" word.

But what compelled me to really write was that i was counting the archive links. I've been open for buisness for 17 months. 17. Thats a pretty awesome number. Thats nearly a year and a half. CoOlnEss. heheh.

Pear Jelly Beans!

School is OVAH! no more gopo! no more ms huddleston! But there are things i take for granted about school. Like, to be oddly specific and sappy, seeing joe everyday. It just occured to me that i wont. What am i going to do!?! Whos gonna tickle me and whos gonna glare at me (with those intense eyes). And i hope nothign happens.

But today was hot. I went strawberry picking. And this week was intense. It seemed like wave after wave of stress. And you can never tell if it pays off.

Geez, that summer venture thing is looking pretty gloomy right now. 4 weeks, wihtout any of my current friends or loves (hopefully i'll make some friends, no one can replace my love). Hopefully the biochemistry and physics i'll be learning will make 4 weeks seem a lot shorter.

and science olympiad is over. no more studying! well, for a while. I dunno, i kinda miss my family--i miss the way KOH forms a brown precipitate when mixed with AgNO3, i miss the way

CaCO3 forms CO2 gas with HCl and/or Al(NO3)3; and yes, i even miss HCl comgin home drunk every night having gambled away $400.23.
